This animation shows how the FourStar Galaxy Evolution Survey (ZFOURGE) builds a colorful photo album of galaxies by combining imaging taken at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. By staring at these patches of the sky for 45 nights, ZFOURGE measures distances to more than 60,000 galaxies spanning more than 12 billion years of cosmic time.
