Researchers have delineated mechanisms that enable bacteria to adapt to varying viscosities in their environment. They found that when the functioning of the bacterial motility appendage - the flagellum - is physically obstructed, the rotary motor that operates the flagellum undergoes internal changes to restore homeostasis in its function.
