Double Gyroid in Soft Matter

An unexpected ‘black swan’ defect has been discovered in soft matter for the first time. Using an advanced microscopy technique called slice-and-view scanning electron microscopy tomography, Dr. Edwin L. Thomas, professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and his team of researchers have uncovered a twin boundary defect in a soft polymer that has never been observed before.
